10 Minutes on the Bus is Better Than 2 Hours of Boring Study
The biggest myth? I will sit down today and study for two hours. No, you won't. And even if you do, your brain will stop focusing after forty minutes. You will start thinking about dinner instead of English.
In my experience, only one thing works: 10 minutes every day. Ten minutes on the bus, in a shop, or while you brush your teeth. English is not a school subject; it is a habit. You brush your teeth every day, right? You don't do it once a week for two hours. It’s the same with English.
What Can You Do Today?
Change the language on your phone. It is annoying for two days, but then you will learn words like Settings, Cancel, or Dismiss without thinking.
Follow one English channel about your hobby. Do you like cooking, cars, or history? Watch videos about it in English. Your brain will focus on the information, not the grammar.
Repeat after the speaker. Watch a short video and say the sentences out loud. Try to copy the accent. You might feel silly, but your mouth needs to practice new movements.
Did you know that the 100 most frequent English words make up 50% of all conversation? Learn these first. It is better than learning names of animals you will never see.
The Order They Didn’t Teach You at School
At school, we had to do tests and learn grammar tables. The result? People can use to be perfectly, but they are afraid to order a coffee. Nobody in the real world cares about perfect grammar.
Last week, I had a manager in my class. He knew professional words, but he couldn't ask for a blanket on a plane. Why? Because school taught him grammar tables, but not how to survive in real life.
Nature is smarter: Listen first. A lot. Even if you don't understand. Your ears need to get used to the sound. Then speak — even to yourself in the kitchen (even if your family thinks you are crazy). Reading and writing come last.
Why ChatGPT Is Not Everything
ChatGPT is a great tool for emails, but it talks like a textbook. The real world is different. People have accents, they mumble, and they make mistakes. Use AI to practice talking, but remember: real language is about emotions. Making mistakes is better than knowing every grammar rule.
Why It Feels Hard Sometimes
In the beginning, you improve very fast. You learn hello and beer and you feel great. But then it gets harder. You feel like you are not moving forward. It is not your fault. This is normal! It is called the upside-down pyramid effect. The more you know, the more work you need to do to see progress. Don't give up just before you reach your goal.
English is a tool, not a goal. Tomorrow, just watch one video about something you like. Even if you don't understand everything, it is better than looking at a list of irregular verbs.
What about you? Which English rule from school was totally useless for you in real life? Tell us in the comments!
